Common Mistakes Made by Interviewers During Interviews

Human Resource Management

Job interviews have been used since time immemorial as a tool to assess the suitability of a candidate for a particular role. A job interview is a formal meeting during which a candidate is asked questions by an interviewer to assess their suitability for a position of employment. It is a crucial part of talent recruitment and acquisition as it enables the employer to evaluate the candidates’ suitability for vacant positions. Interviews, if not done properly, can hinder the business from attracting top talent.  The following are common mistakes made by interviewers:

  1. Being inadequately prepared– Interviewees spend a lot of time preparing for interviews, and if an interviewer is not as prepared, it can make the interviewee feel undervalued. Interviewers should review candidates’ CVs and understand the role they are recruiting for so as to be adequately prepared for interviews.
  2. Quick judgement– Interviewers sometimes develop a biased judgement of candidates based on superficial aspects such as dress or physical appearance. To avoid biases, interviewers should objectively evaluate candidates based on the requirements of the job.
  3. Talking too much–  An interview should allow the interviewee to showcase their skills, competencies and knowledge and how they relate to the role they are interviewing for. It is therefore important for interviewers to recognize this and refrain from dominating the conversation and instead allow the interviewee to do most of the talking.
  4. Poor timekeeping– Most times, interviewees strive to keep time when attending interviews. When interviewers fail to keep time or request a short-notice rescheduling of the interview, they can end up giving the candidate a negative impression of the company.
  5. Failing to prepare for the interviewees’ questions–  Interviewers should anticipate and prepare for the questions that interviewees may ask. This way, they will be able to respond to the interviewees and provide clarifications on any grey areas.

It has been proven that interviews are essential for recruitment, but attracting and retaining top talent has become increasingly challenging. By avoiding the mistakes above, companies can be better placed to effectively fill vacant positions.
