CHIEF HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICER

Role Overview

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Chief Human Resources Officer will lead the Human Resources Department by designing, directing, and managing company-wide Human Resources functions. The incumbent will achieve this by addressing the issues such as succession planning, workforce development, key employee retention, organization design, and change management. 

The Chief Human Resources Officer will play a pivotal role in driving the people’s strategy and initiatives for the organization. This position requires a seasoned Human Resources Professional. A background in hospitality or related industries will be an added advantage. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, adept at implementing HR programs to attract, develop, and retain top talent while fostering a positive work culture aligned with the company values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing Human Resources strategies including talent acquisition, performance management, compensation, benefits, training, records management, safety, succession planning, employee relations, and labor relations. 
  • Managing the human resources operations by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, counseling, and disciplining staff. This will also include planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing staff performance, managing compensation and benefits, determining production, productivity, quality, and customer-service strategies.
  • Developing human resources operations financial strategies by estimating, forecasting, and anticipating requirements, trends, and variances. This will also include aligning monetary resources, developing action plans, measuring, and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing the impact of variances. 
  • Providing the management with efficient human resources advice and decisions based on information and analysis.
  • Guiding management and employee actions by developing and updating policies, procedures, and guidelines; communicating and enforcing organizational values and ensuring adherence to employment laws.
  • Designing, directing, and managing a company-wide process of organization development that addresses issues such as succession planning, workforce development, key employee retention, organization design, and change management.
  • Managing the company-wide committees including staff Saccos, welfare funds, and health and safety committees.
  • Ensuring continuous development and implementation of skills training and corporate calendars. The training and development will cover mandatory, statutory, attitudinal and skill-based training programs.
  • Facilitating regular consultative forums between the management and the union and implementing the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Leading competitive market research to establish pay practices and salary bands that help recruit and retain key staff. This will also involve realigning the wage band for all positions, in sync with market conditions.

Key Qualifications and Experience  

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, or Organization Development. A Masters’ degree is an added advantage. 
  • Must be a registered Member of the Institute of Human Resource Management – Kenya (IHRM (K). A practicing Certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience, out of which, a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources positions.
  • Training and broad knowledge of employment law, compensation, organizational planning, organizational development, employee relations, safety, training, and labor relations.
  • Should be empathetic and a good listener and should be able to form and grow relationships with employees in addition to departmental tasks. Should possess mentorship skills. 
  • Ability to manage a large workforce, motivating and setting performance standards for direct reports.
